“Sirs what must I do to be saved?”

The Philippian Jailor to Paul and Silas, Acts 16:30

(Note: All scriptures quoted are from the King James Version. While some of the “modern” translations (such as the New International Version) are more easily read, they are influenced in their translation by man's ideas. Thus, the KJV is more reliable to hold to the original text.)

(All bold-faced type in scripture quotations has been added for emphasis. No change has been made in the quotes.)

In order to be saved by the grace of God, you must be willing to submit yourself to the Will of God. Consider what the following verses say about the Word of God and a complete and thorough study of it:

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.” (2 Timothy 3:16, 17)

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15)

“Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.” (John 5:39)

“These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.” (Acts 17:11)

To please God, you must look to His Word, study it, and apply it to your life. This alone will lead to salvation!

“Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 7:21)

A complete and thorough search of the New Testament reveals that salvation comes through the following steps:

1.  HEAR the Gospel Message.

  •  “And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe.” (Acts 15:7)
  •  “And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized.” (Acts 18:8)
  • "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” (Romans 10:17)

2.  BELIEVE the Word of God.

  • “For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” (Romans 10:10)
  • “He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.” (1 John 5:10)
  • “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” (Romans 1:16)
  • Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.”  (John 5:24)
  • “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)

3.  REPENT of Your Sins/Lifestyle.

  • “I tell you, Nay: but except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.” (Luke 13:3)
  • “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.” (Acts 3:19)
  • “And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men everywhere to repent:” (Acts 17:30)
  • “But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance.” (Acts 26:20)
  • “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9)

4.  CONFESS Your Belief that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

  • “Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 10:32)
  • “For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” (Romans 10:10)
  • “Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.” (1 John 4:15)

5.  BE BAPTIZED for the Remission of Sins.

  • “Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.” (John 3:5)
  • “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.” (Mark 16:16)
  • “Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” (Acts 2:38)
  • “And now why tarriest thou? Arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.” (Acts 22:16)
  • “Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.” (Romans 6:3, 4)
  • “Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.” (Colossians 2:12)
  • “The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:” (1 Peter 3:21)

6.  LIVE A FAITHFUL CHRISTIAN LIFE.

  • “His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.” (Matthew 25:21)
  • “Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.” (James 1:12)
  • “Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.” (Revelation 2:10)

While any denomination can take these scriptures and misapply them to satisfy their own desires, a complete study of the New Testament reveals God's plan of salvation as shown in these scriptures. Throughout the Book of Acts, one can see this plan at work.  While some examples of conversion may not explicitly demonstrate all six steps listed above you can see in the conversions of the people on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2), the people of Samaria (Acts 8), the Ethiopian eunuch (Acts 8), Saul of Tarsus (Acts 9), the household of Cornelius (Acts 10), the household of Lydia (Acts 16), the household of the Philippian jailor (Acts 16), the Corinthians (Acts 18), and the Ephesians (Acts 19), that their conversions began through HEARING the gospel and ended with BEING BAPTIZED.  For those who misapply these and any scriptures, consider these verses:

“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.” (2 Timothy 4:3, 4)

“Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish aught from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.” (Deuteronomy 4:2)

“He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.” (John 12:48)

Examine your beliefs; consider the teachings of your church. Do they coincide with the Word of God? If not, then why not?  If you truly desire to please God, you will follow His commandments and not those created by man!
